Brazil receives a lot of bad press about its violence and high crime rate. While undoubtedly sensationalized by the media, many tourists do get robbed while in Brazil, and you’ll want to minimize the risks of becoming a victim. Vitória as a state capital is not an exception but if you follow a minimum of common sense rules, you’re unlikely to come to any real harm:
- Carry only the minimum needed;
- Do not carry any more money than you need,
- Keep small change handy so you do not have to flash a wallet to pay;
- Do not try to resist thieves;
- At anytime of the day, out of the conference place, do not wander around with obvious jewellery, MP3, cell phone, expensive watches, camera, laptop, etc.
- Use official taxi of the city that you had called from your hotel (or conference place); check that they are using their fare meter;
- After dark, do not walk along empty or nearly empty streets or into deserted parks.
